ABSTRACT

Exclamation mark or kantanfu in Japanese, is one of written language elements used to convey expressions. Based on exclamation mark usage, the meaning and nuance of a sentence could differ. Amidst the COVID19 pandemic that limits one's interaction to another, the frequency of digital communication has significantly increased. Digital communication through chats has become an activity that cannot be separated from everyday life. Therefore, it is important to understand exclamation marks correctly. The aim of this study is to avoid misunderstandings that could happen through chats in Japanese. This study will compare the use and interpretation of exclamation marks in Japanese chat between Indonesians and Japanese. Japanese chat messages containing exclamation marks were analyzed using Hymes' SPEAKING theory. This study uses Creswell's convergent mixed methods, with quantitative data of Indonesians' questionnaire survey results, and qualitative data of interviews with Japanese people. Study results show that there are differences in the use and function of exclamation marks between Indonesians and Japanese. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The process of attracting new students is a constant challenge for Portuguese Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). It is challenging because it implies the definition of a communication strategy that uses both traditional and digital tactics to promote the institution and its educational offer. Considering the constraints resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, HEIs had to change their strategies and, in a short period, create digital communication mechanisms to facilitate new students' access to relevant information about the institution. This paper intends thus to determine and evaluate which are the predominant factors in seeking information about a degree in business sciences, specifically regarding the Porto Accounting and Business School in Portugal. To do that, we will consider the various factors that tend to influence the decision-making process of choosing a higher education degree, namely: the institutional website, social networks (Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube), other contact mechanisms (live chat, e-mail, text messages, ZOOM videoconference) and alumni testimonials. This study will also consider the role of terminology and positive language to obtain a successful communication strategy for social media. The analysis of these factors, combined with research developed with a focus group of high school students' graduates to assess their online preferences, will allow the presentation of a digital communication proposal whose purpose is to attract and retain new students. This proposal will consider the role of a strategic terminology management approach to capture students' attention when responding to their social media preferences. This paper results from the perception that being aware of the students' online preferences and communication skills and needs is essential to enhance the quality of the digital communication that HEIs promote in social media channels, especially in a time frame as specific and multifaceted as the one that we are currently experiencing. © The Authors, (2022). ABSTRACT

COVID-19 content spreads wildly on social media and produces significant effects in both causing social panic and assisting pandemic management. However, what really enhances the diffusion of pandemic-related content during COVID-19, particularly from the perspective of the content itself, remains unexplored. Using large-scale COVID-19 tweets posted on Twitter, this paper empirically examines the effects of the four key characteristics, namely emotions, topics, hashtags, and mentions, on information spread in the pandemic. The empirical results show that most negative emotions have positive effects on retweeting. Nevertheless, the positive effect of trust on retweeting is unexpectedly the strongest. And the positive effects of the political topics and mentioning politicians further indicate that people are sensitive to the politicization of information during the pandemic. The strongest anger intensity in the political topic also needs to be noticed. The results complement the extant understanding of information diffusion during COVID-19 and provide insights for the governments to understand the psychology and behavior of large population during disasters like global pandemics. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

Community-based tourism is a critical part of a growing city's economy. With the arrival of COVID-19, tourism activity declined considerably, resulting in a loss of US$1.281 billion in tourism GDP. For this reason, this sector is seeking to reactivate itself by adopting the biosecurity measures recommended by the National Risk and Emergency Management Service. Given that digital communication and tourism are closely linked to project implementation, the general objective arises to analyze communication strategies in the community tourism sector of the San Pedro of Vilcabamba parish, Ecuador. A vision of the current state of community tourism in the parish was obtained, and the digital communication strategies used to promote the entrepreneurship route, an initiative that arose with the pandemic, were analyzed. It was determined that the parish uses digital communication strategies, although they are unaware of their application, triggering a lack of preparation in digital communication, mainly due to the lack of personnel in this area. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

During the COVID-19 pandemic, there was an undeniable acceleration of time when social distancing measures were in place. Digital natives are the population group that was most accustomed to online tools, which allowed them to stay in contact and carry out their daily activities during the most critical stage of the pandemic. An important element that strengthens interaction in digital media is trust, both in the sources of information and in the medium. For this reason, quantitative research was developed in which the associations between trust in social networks and other digital communication tools in Mexican youth were analyzed. The study was conducted with students from public and private universities during 2021, when strict confinement measures still prevailed in Monterrey, Nuevo León. The study confirms some of the findings of other research in which trust is a fundamental variable in effective communication through digital channels. © 2023, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

This paper introduces a hands-on laboratory curriculum for an undergraduate mechatronics course that delivers a team-based collaborative student experience for remote learning. COVID-19 pandemic created unexpected challenges for educators, where in-person teachings had to quickly transition to remote learning. This significantly impacted learning outcomes for hands-on laboratory courses by students not having access to laboratory equipment and the difficulty to follow the education practice “learn by doing” in the confines of their home. A remote laboratory curriculum is introduced with a series of hands-on mechatronic labs. Three individual student labs introduce how to operate a microcontroller, process infrared sensor signals, and program digital communication displays. Then two team-based collaborative labs explore how students can transmit/receive signals to control a servo using an ESP32 microcontroller with wireless communication over a bi-directional shared server. Then a course project on remote teleoperation is introduced for student-to-student collaboration at home. The learning experience gave students insight into a growing technological area, where teleoperation is in such fields as in-home healthcare, space and ocean exploration, and human-machine collaboration. Student survey results provided positive feedback on their ability to meet project requirements with the challenges of being at home instead of having an in-person learning environment. © American Society for Engineering Education, 2022.

ABSTRACT

The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of understanding the effectiveness of online learning tools, especially for the socio-cultural aspects of education. In online classes, we observed that students had low participation in online discussions with peers or instructors. Recognizing the importance of having a platform that supports digital collaboration, academic content delivery, and social interactions between students in a class, we utilized a platform popular with students, Discord, in two large undergraduate Computer Science classes at a mid-sized university. We evaluated their experiences and perceptions using a survey at the beginning and end of the quarter. Eighty-seven percent of participants who used the class Discord stated that using a digital collaboration platform like Discord to supplement classroom online interaction enhanced their sense of belonging in the class. Drawbacks were non-class relevant chatter, questions being lost in the shuffle, and academic honesty. We hope this work will assist educators to bridge the gap between the in-person and online classrooms by leveraging digital communication platforms which facilitate a space for student socialization. © 2022 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The widespread adoption of home-schooling around the world precipitated by the Covid-19 pandemic has brought afloat the inequalities in household environment and parental support to early childhood education and care (ECEC) that, according to research, much contribute to uneven childhood education and future social mobility opportunities. With new trends of remote work emerging and predictively prevailing beyond the compulsory confinements, and extended learning delays to recover by children, it is expected that increasingly flexible childcare arrangements are to be demanded by society to fit this new reality - addressing simultaneously long-time concerns from academia and society about the importance of parental involvement and individualized, and child-led, informal learning practices in ECEC. It is proposed the study, co-design and early impact assessment of (1) a nursery- and primary- school-home digital communication platform to facilitate the reveal and setup of relevant informal education activities based on children's own formal education goals and their household's resources - human, spatial and material -, and (2) a serious game, mounted on top of this platform, to motivate and empower young children to be the drivers of their own informal education programs, by leveraging storytelling and role-play over an interface that is accessible and intelligible to them. © 2022 Owner/Author.

ABSTRACT

2021 was an election year for the Bulgarians - they had to go to the polls for three national parliamentary votes (one regular and two early) and once again - for president. The pre-election campaigns for all these votes were held in the conditions of COVID-19 epidemic, hard political confrontation and some concomitant factors such as the European Football Championship, the summer vacations and the strong inflationary trends. Internet platforms and especially social networks became increasingly popular channels for politicians to communicate with voters. That is why the aim of the study focuses on the digital pre-election campaigns. The object is the dynamics of the internet connection between the voters (especially the older adults) and the MP candidates. The subject refers to the election messages of the leaders of the political forces, presented in their Facebook profiles. The methodology is comparative analysis and empirical study, conducted by academic research team from the Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication at The St. Kliment Ohridski Sofia University. The scope of the study includes those political forces that have passed the 4% electoral threshold. The results are indicative for those interested in digital political communication during social pandemic isolation. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.

ABSTRACT

The pandemic caused by COVID-19 triggered a severe disruption in businesses worldwide, with pressing changes aimed business survival and striving. In this context, the pace of the digital transformation of business was tremendously accelerated, launching managers and employees into a new world of digital challenges. In this work, we explore the dynamic capabilities of businesses to cope with the COVID-19 contingencies, focusing on survival and success measures, dynamic digital capabilities and emerging management skills. We interviewed 24 business managers using semi-structured interviews and mixed-methods research to reveal how these businesses have coped during the second wave of COVID-19 in the country. Our results show that little to no governmental and financial support was received, and overall negative impact on the business potential to succeed at several levels, with little exceptions. Most businesses reveal having dynamic digital capabilities in place and ability to take advantage of their digital presence to foster business survival and growth. These capabilities are, however, heavily built on what we believe to be core emerging business management skills, as they are associated with several areas of expertise in the domain of digital communication. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

ABSTRACT

As countries around the world are adjusting in the post COVID-19 era, a new “normal” has emerged. Industries are reassessing their entire business model, assessing new ways to use advanced technology tools, reinforcing the impact of growing online commerce and preparing the return to their business. Opportunities to push digitalization and automation has accelerated by rapid learning about what it takes to drive productivity in organizations when staff are unavailable and without the resources they would normally access. The pandemic has also shaped a new working life/environment with a combination of remote and on-site working, a hybrid model, in which some employees are on premises, while others work from home. With the explosion of workforce conversations on digital collaboration tools, knowledge now flows dynamically across the digital communications channels that define the new working relationships. This implies that the organizations’ approaches to knowledge management need to consider how emerging technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence and collaborative platforms, can support problem-solving and help workers innovate and uncover new insights. The paper aims to perform an analysis of the impact which innovative technologies may have on the implementation and application of KM initiatives and activities in the post-COVID era. Moreover, as knowledge management and working life are strongly connected to each other, their relation is also further analyzed. In particular, the paper will investigate the new trends in working life, such as Work 4.0, and discuss their criticality and applicability. To summarise, the paper will highlight the changes that have been inevitably induced by the pandemic in organizations and in the ways employees work, not only acquiring and creating new knowledge using technology, but continuously disseminating it throughout the organization. ABSTRACT

This paper aims to determine the potentials as well as the limitations of digital communication to compensate for the massive decrease in direct social interaction due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The availability of “DorfFunk” – a smartphone app for communication in local rural communities – was expanded in three German federal states during the spring of 2020 to counteract some of the negative consequences of measures taken to contain the spread of the virus (curfews, quarantines, social distancing). Here, we present the results of a survey on the experiences, needs, and perceived benefits/limitations of DorfFunk users in times of the pandemic. The results indicate that DorfFunk can contribute to coping with such a situation, especially in the local sphere. Local information and the connection to the community turned out to be of importance, while functionalities for the interaction with other individuals were regarded as secondary. The benefits of DorfFunk were valued more positively in regions where the service had been established already before the pandemic. © 2021, Springer Nature Switzerland AG.
